In this series Namibian-born photographer Margaret Courtney-Clarke’s documents the daily lives and historical traditions of the Imazighen women of North Africa whose centuries old culture is slowly being forced to give in to the pressures of Arabisation and Westernization.

The photographs have been cataloged in this book.

I was just wondering what you thought was beauty? How do you presieve beauty? What does your country presieve beauty as? If you have time I would love to hear your answer. Thanks! :D

Hey Sara, nice to meet you. Well beauty is a really broad topic lol. I don’t have a definite definition of beauty but the older I get, the more i recognize different kinds of beauty. When they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it’s definitely true because beauty can be found in so many different Way. While I was growing up i did favor smaller facial features because that was the standard of beauty that people within my culture set. for example, small/fine nose, full lips, bright eyes, and long hair And a lot of people within in my culture favored lighter skin individuals but it wasn’t that important as long as your face fit the standard. Having really white teeth and dark gums is also considered beautiful.. I still do believe that those characteristics are beautiful but now that I am older i am aware that that’s not the only kind of beauty. The reason why I mentioned my culture and not my country Is because each culture might have different preferences and different ideas and I would be generalizing too much if I spoke for all the ethnic groups in my country.

She is so stunning..from her attire I can tell that she’s Fulani from Senegal. I am from guinea which is right next to Senegal but I am still amazed at how much gold the older woman carry on them. I wore a few before and it wasn’t even as big as what she’s wearing in the photo but it was sooo heavy. I don’t know how they do it.

I find your blog hard for me to read. I’m a 70+ year old, California-born, former Peace Corps/Nigeria from the 60s. I knew and worked with Fulani people, and Hausa, and Burim, and Kanuri, and Yoruba, and…. I like seeing these faces again, but I regret that they are neither easily identified by name, ethnicity, nationality or anything else. The are just faces. If your background were less cluttered and not black with green or blue text it would be easier on these old eyes of mine. I like your blog enough to follow it. I wish you the best. haii im Sudanese , and i saw your post on trying to find Sudanese hina , my aunt does it all the time for special occasions ,since they dont have the real ones in the place im livivng in right now wich is ottawa they buy it from asian or arab stores then they add more ingredients to it and it just turns out soo beautiful

13. Things Africans do that pisses you off?

This is specifically done by the youth, but I hate when young Africans come here and assimilate to this new culture and end up forgetting where they came from and the values they had back home. It’s okay to embrace new ideas but don’t forget about yours.

21. Do you miss anyone in Africa?

Yessssssss..I miss a lot of people :( I miss my aunt though(I was named after her and still attached to her). I love her. 💖💖. I want to go back so bad just to see her.

27. Would you rather live in Africa or in your current location?

Well Africa is a continent and its huge and different from country to country. I am sure there might be other parts of Africa that I’ll probably love more than the U.S. I think I wouldn’t mind living in my country but I feel like my life is here because I grew up here. I only have my family there, but all of my memories are here.

29. Dumbest question someone has asked you about Africa?

Do We have bikes in Africa -_______________- ????

36. What country has the cutest boys?

That’s hardddd! Africa boys are hot. I can’t see myself with anything else. They are also very diverse in physical features. A lot of options. I can’t answer this question because all the countries have the good and the bad. Lol.

Fulani/wodaabe/Fula/peul/fulfude««« all refers to the same people..lol this confuses people for the most part..
This is a myth..but they(elders) say that every Fulani had or have this fabric..lol..like some people don’t feel like a legit Fulani until they own one of these lol…of course it’s impossible that we all have this at our house..but I definitely have one lol..and based on how she’s dressed…I’ll take a guess and say she’s a Fulani from Niger about to go see the “Gerewol”..
